The ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer Certification is available for people with
experience in the plumbing/piping fields who are qualified to install medical gas piping,
equipment, and components at health care facilities.
Includes ASME IX Brazing Certification: The ASSE 6010 certification
includes the ASME IX Brazing Certification, requiring candidates to pass both a written
and practical brazing examination.
Experience prerequisites are verified by your attestation on the Program Application,
and attestations are subject to audit by MGTI.
The examination is written to NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities Code,
2024 edition. MGTI always examines against the most recent edition of the
code. The certification awarded covers the 2012 through 2024 editions.
Content is also drawn from NFPA 55, the ASSE Series 6000 Standard, and other generally
accepted industry documents.
You braze test coupons in the flat (horizontal) and
vertical upflow positions using a controlled kit supplied by MGTI. An
oil-free dry nitrogen purge flows continuously throughout, and before any heat is
applied you verify with an oxygen analyzer that oxygen within the assembly is
below one percent. No flux is used. Adding filler metal to a
completed vertical upflow joint counts as downflow brazing and fails the position.
Two attempts at each position. The kit supplies material for four
coupons — two horizontal and two vertical — and you submit both coupons
for each position. Where one coupon in a position is rejected and the other meets the
acceptance criteria, the position is qualified.
Acceptance criteria: a minimum of 80 percent fill, with no visible
gap between tube and coupling and no void at the cap. The grounds on which a coupon is
rejected are listed in the instructions supplied with your kit — read them
before you braze, not after.
MGTI does not assess its own candidates' coupons. Completed coupons
are packed, sealed, and shipped to an independent third-party laboratory, where they
are sectioned and visually examined by a Certified Welding Inspector
against published criteria. Candidate paperwork travels separately from the coupons.
The examination is witnessed throughout by an Authorized Representative or proctor,
who confirms your identity from valid government-issued identification and signs the
Brazer Qualification Record. No practice brazing takes place during the examination
session.
The ASSE 6010 certification is valid for three years and is renewed
through MGTI's recertification program.
The ASME IX brazing qualification does not expire on a cycle. It
remains in effect for as long as you continue to use the qualified procedure and
document that use — a brazed joint at intervals not exceeding six months. It
lapses only when continuity is broken. Because the two run on different clocks, you
may hold a current brazing qualification alongside a lapsed certification, or the
reverse.
