The Medical Gas Training Institute is an independent certification body for the ASSE Series 6000 medical gas certifications, delivering testing and credentials for professionals across the industry. The organization prioritizes quality assurance and practical application in its examination frameworks.
As a personnel certifying agency, MGTI's policies, governance, and certification processes are designed to align with the framework of ISO/IEC 17024, Conformity Assessment — General Requirements for Bodies Operating Certification of Persons. Our mission is to provide comprehensive certification services efficiently and effectively for the medical gas industry.
Program Development
MGTI's certification programs were developed by leading authorities on medical gas and vacuum systems, by instructors holding ASSE 6050 and 6055 certification. The programs are designed for individuals involved in the design, installation, commissioning, operation, service, and repair of medical gas and vacuum systems, and are based on the code requirements of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code, current edition.
Organizational Structure
MGTI is governed by its Board of Directors, which appoints all subcommittee members, conducts an annual review of the Program Manager and a general internal audit of the organization, and is the final level of appeal. The Board is currently led by Jonathan C. Willard.
The Certification Scheme Committee is responsible for the rules of the certification programs — processes, procedures, appeals, revocations, issuances, and suspensions. Its membership is drawn from the Board and from across the compressed medical gas and education industries, and the Board chairperson strives to maintain a balance in which no single commercial, educational, or other interest group predominates. The committee meets at least twice a year and conducts a periodic audit of MGTI's adherence to its own policies and of their continued alignment with ISO/IEC 17024.
The Examination Committees, one per certification knowledge area, are responsible for the content of MGTI's examinations — the authorship and technical accuracy of each item, and the addition, revision, and removal of items from the question bank. They are supported by in-house examination experts holding advanced degrees in education, who assist with item development, review, and analysis. Those experts support the committees; they do not replace the committees' responsibility for examination content.
Separation of Duties
MGTI separates the administration of certification from its oversight, so that no role reviews its own work:
- The Program Administrator operates the programs day to day and makes the certification decision for individual candidates — but decides no appeal and no complaint
- The Program Manager holds higher-level approvals, owns program content and document and examination security, and decides first-level appeals and complaints — but makes no individual certification decisions
- The Examination Committees are responsible for examination content, so the person who decides certification does not determine the content of the examination those decisions rest on
- No person makes a certification decision concerning a candidate they instructed, or an examination they wrote, administered, or proctored
